Is Hell a realm dedicated to the punishment of evildoers, ruled by a satanic presence that is carnally fulfilled by the misery of lost souls, and bent on holy destruction?
No, not in a fantasy world where penance is balanced with mercy, in a cosmic need for true justice.
You will find no demons in this structured Hell, but there are plenty of sinners learning the error of their ways, maintaining harmony and peace for the living and the dead.

Maya, the daughter of a king, is a foretold child with mystical powers and a prophetic mission to serve her people. However, she struggles with her identity and finds life a challenge, so much so that she has difficulty connecting with family and friends. Her path soon takes an unexpected turn when a cloud of darkness envelops the land, taking all that the people have, including the memory of those who pass through its misty veil. To protect his daughter from the nebulous scourge, the king sends her away to be reared in a land, far from his own. The day of her return sets in motion an adventure, which pits good against evil, and Maya against a host of fantastic challenges. Is she capable of overcoming? Has she honed her innate powers to benefit the realm? Time will tell, as you read the intricate plot leading to a thought-provoking conclusion to book #1...Alive Souls – Inception.

I received this book free for review from the author or publisher in exchange for an honest review. Despite the privilege of receiving a free book, I’m absolutely candid about it below because I believe authors and readers will benefit most from honest reviews rather than vacuous 5-star reviews.

This book is a weird mix of the Superman "alien sent to Earth to get away" theme and the Never-ending Story's "the nothing is taking over our world" story. The story is complex and endlessly convoluted but at the same time extremely short which makes for an odd and transition-free reading experience.

To the positive side, the author has no shortage of ideas and seems to spout them onto the page with complete abandon. I've read many books that had only a fraction as much to say but took four times longer to say it. This book certainly doesn't leave you guessing about anything for long.

To the negative, the book is almost painfully difficult to read at times. The narrative thrashes through so much so quickly and completely without transition that there is no time at all for proper plot or character development. You can pound through this book in less than an hour but it seems a lifetime has passed in the life of the protagonist. Add to this the often nonsensical things which happen to the character because of this lack of transition and you end up with a real head-scratcher. Textually, the book has some real problems as well. It reads like a child's book most of the time but will suddenly launch into vocabulary that sent me to the dictionary and then right back to child lit. It's almost as if the author consulted a thesaurus just to have something big to throw in about every 20 pages or was not a native speaker of English. Add to this the frequent misuse of words altogether and you've got a book that needs a lot of editing.

In summary, the author has a lot of good ideas but has absolutely no idea how to properly cobble them together into a novel. This book feels like the Cliff's Notes version of a 3-4 volume epic masterpiece. It gives you the general flavor of what the author wanted to accomplish but fails to provide any of the meat. Just as you were getting to know what was going on the book is suddenly over.

PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.

Alive Souls Inception, Elena Yulkina, Digital Services, Inc., 2015

Maya is your average teenager, but not really. She can read minds, and she can control fire with her mind. She knows that she is not like her classmates in school. One night, she asks, out loud, who is she and where did she come from. Then she gets the answer.

Maya suddenly finds herself in a well-lit ballroom with lots of expensive-looking paintings on the walls. It is also full of people. She is suddenly hugged by a younger man who treats her like his long-lost daughter, which she is. It seems that Maya is a real princess who was sent to Earth to get her out of the way. All of the inhabited worlds have been fighting a long-running war against the Darkness. They have been holding it off, as best they can, while waiting for Maya to become old enough, and powerful enough, to fight the Darkness single-handedly (scripture says so).

Maya can't go back to Earth, because there is too much chance of her being found by the Darkness. Her twin sister, Varvara, takes her place. She can't stay where she is, on a planet called Zabir, for the same reason. Maya is sent to another world, called Udas. A young man named Mayvert volunteers to go with her, as her bodyguard, but he does not do a very good job of it. There are several narrow escapes, including Maya being burned at the stake as some sort of monster, and walking out of the flames, totally unhurt. Did I mention that Maya and Mayvert are able to grow actual, working wings? Does the Darkness come to Udas to find Maya?

This is a short novel, less than 100 pages, but it is surprisingly good. It works as a teen/young adult tale. It also works as a fantasy story, with interesting possibilities for future stories. It's well worth reading.
You need to read a book of this promising young writer if you want to sit back relaxed and to be dropped out of everyday reality, embark on an adventure and travel between worlds with the main characters of «Alive Soul Inception».
The plot is so exciting and it evolves dynamically. The method used here was rather old – father rescues his daughter in the present, but meets his mistakes later in the future.
The characters are meaningful – they combine the good and the evil in various proportions, while moving from evil to good and back. They are just like real human souls – meaningful and self-developing.
Remember the idea of the author «To not do more evil, each soul atoned for its evil by being both a criminal and a victim. Those who did evil, got evil in response. Thus, a fragile but beautiful balance was achieved…» You have to read the book to find out how the characters are solving their problems in this deep and optimistic novel!
The book is easy to read. I’ve got through it in one breath. I was hoping to get all the questions answered, but the author has left an intrigue I am waiting for the second book of the author. What will happen to main characters? How will their lives be in the future? I recommend this.
